The latest facial recognition technology low-cost VCSEL laser chip technology, can replace LED in the facial detection and scanning.

What is VCSEL?
VCSEL is the abbreviation of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser. It is a semiconductor laser diode, is researched and developed based on gallium arsenide and other semiconductor materials, and it is different from LED, LD and other light sources. Different from the traditional Edge emitter laser, VCSEL vertically emits the high power optical laser beam from the top surface, and has such advantages as small volume, circular output spot, natural 2D structure light, single longitudinal mode output, small threshold current, large operating temperature range, low price, and easy integration into large-area array. It is widely used in the optical communication, optical interconnection, optical storage and other fields.
Generally, the operating wavelength of VCSEL device is 850nm-1,310nm and the transmission rate is 2.125-150Gbps. It is mainly composed of three parts: a) upper DBR; b) active area; c) lower DBR. These three parts constitute a resonant cavity, which can establish the electromagnetic wave.

VCSEL Is New Technology Means For Facial Recognition

VCSEL can be in the form of 2D array so that single chip can contain hundreds of or thousands of independent light sources, so as to increase the maximum output power and improve the long-term reliability. LED is often used for 3D induction technology in the early stage. However, due to a lack of resonant cavity, LED laser beam is more decentralized than VCSEL and the coupling efficiency is relatively low. Besides, as VCSEL has higher precision, smaller size, lower power consumption and higher reliability, more and more 3D cameras are using VCSEL.
VCSEL is not an emerging scientific product. Last year, Iphone X was integrated with VCSEL for the first time regarding the facial recognition, which shows its strong performance. After that, it enters the sight of the public. VCSEL chip is not only used for facial recognition, but it is widely used in distance measurement, laser radar, 3D perception and other fields.
